In this series, we spotlight the winners of the 2025 MPSA Leadership Awards. Here is a Q&A with Pulse Technology.

Describe your company.

Pulse Technology is a leading provider of Managed Print Services, as well as Production Print, cybersecurity/IT, Audio Visual, and other services. The 70-year-old multi-generational family business, serving Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, employs eighty people. From its beginnings as Des Plaines Office Equipment, the company has evolved from one that in its early days sold typewriters, calculators, and office furniture to a virtual “one stop shop” that has grown through acquisitions as well as diversifying its menu of services. The Pulse client base includes educational institutions, business organizations, hospitals, law offices, accounting firms, sporting organizations, and financial institutions, among others.

Describe your solution.

The Pulse Technology Managed Print Service offering is client-focused, with the objective of assessing the client’s needs, not merely “selling something.” The discovery process seeks to understand the client’s challenges, mapping out where each device is located to assess the true ownership cost. The discovery is followed by financial analysis of the customer’s current costs for document generation. From its cost assessment, Pulse builds a recommended solution. Each individual proposal is customized, offering suggestions for consolidation or standardization, and what will be needed for optimum efficiency. Pulse brings additional solutions to the table, including security–which is important in the MPS offering, protecting clients’ documents, data, and devices.

The Pulse MPS program offers sustainability options, including a partnership program which allows for replanting of thousands of trees. This both helps customers save on their bottom line and helps sustain and grow the global forestry system.

What pain point does your solution solve?

The Pulse Managed Print Services solution is a blueprint for the client as to the actual amount being spent on generating documents. Savings of up to 25% of a company’s total document generation costs allow the company to allocate resources to other areas. The MPS solution reduces “down time” if equipment breaks down or needs supplies such as toner, which is accomplished in several ways:

  • Use of a Data Collection Agent to analyze and report how much a client device is actually printing, along with its supply levels and address any potential issues in real time.
  • Responsive service plan: If a help desk specialist cannot troubleshoot a problem over the phone, the company “triages” service calls based on severity and responds promptly. All field technicians carry a large inventory of the most common parts needed for repairing units.
